GMIT loses out on bid to become technological university
Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has failed in a bid to form a cluster with Letterkenny and Sligo I.T to become a technological university.
The Cabinet has signed off on plans to create three new technological universities in a reform of third level education in the State.
The plans were compiled by the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Education.
According to the Irish Times, 4 applications were put forward, but only 3 have been successful.
A bid from GMIT with Letterkenny and Sligo I.Ts was unsuccessful.
However, the proposals do include the setting up of clusters that will connect the existing 7 universities, the new bodies and all other Institutes of Technology.
