Galway Bay fm newsroom – GMIT has indicated that it’s deepening its existing alliance with Sligo IT and Letterkenny IT with a view to merge in the medium term.

It’s part of a fourth group called the Connacht-Ulster Alliance which has been included in a report published this afternoon by the Minister of Education Ruairi Quinn.

It comes as his department publishes the Heads of a Bill which will allow for the future establishment of Technological Universities and the mergers of institutes of technology nationwide.

Three groups of institutes have now expressed interest in merging.

These are DIT, Tallaght IT and Blandchardstown; Cork IT and Tralee IT and a final grouping of Waterford IT and Carlow IT.

While it’s hoped the new legislation will be passed by the summer, the criteria that the new universities need to meet will be very strict.

Ruairi Quinn says this is about making sure the colleges have the structures in place to become universities.
