Glynn Lifts The Gloom

IN Jeff Kenna’s first game in charge of Galway United, Bray Wanderers initiated a smash and grab 90th minute victory in Terryland Park, but this time around – on his debut as a player – the shoe was firmly on the other foot, as a last-gasp Derek Glynn goal gave United the three points for only the second time this season.
Vinny Faherty, despite a previously fruitless night, was the creator in chief for Glynn’s goal. He picked up the ball wide on the right wing near the halfway line and took on his two immediate opponents. He somehow fought his way past Gareth Cronin and Patrick Kavanagh and fired a cross to the feet of Glynn.
After controlling the ball and seeing his first attempt saved, the Co. Mayo native held his nerve and fired low and under Alan Gough, sending the boisterous travelling fans into convulsions.
This was a hard-earned victory as, for long periods of the second half, United found themselves under severe pressure from a Bray Wanderers side who have now failed to score in five consecutive defeats and have conceded 11 goals in the process.
In what was a largely forgettable first half, United opened the stronger of the two sides, with Ollie Fenn, from his unfamiliar position of left-midfield coming close on a few occasions.
