TWO of the kingpins of Galway football – Salthill/Knocknacarra and Killererin – will collide in the tie of the first round of the Claregalway Hotel senior football championship this weekend.
In many respects, there can be no greater first round clash between two teams who, along with Corofin and Caltra, have set the highest of standards in club football in the county over the past decade.
These two sides last met at the quarterfinal stage of the 2007 championship when finishing level on a scoreline of Killererin 2-7 to Salthill/Knocknacarra 1-10. In the end, it was Killererin who claimed the victory over the 2006 All-Ireland club champions in the replay, winning 1-7 to 0-6 on their way to eventually claiming a coveted county title.
Meanwhile, reigning county and Connacht champions Corofin begin the defence of their title with a tricky opening assignment against Micheal Breathnach, while 2008 county finalists Cortoon Shamrocks face a difficult opener against Caltra.
County intermediate winners St. Michael’s launch their senior championship campaign with a tough opener against Caherlistrane, who were unlucky to lose out to Corofin by a single point, 1-11 to 1-10, following a semi-final replay last year.
