Glenamaddy to get new school ……. at last

A VICTORY for people power was how the announcement that construction of the new secondary school in Glenamaddy was welcomed.

It has been confirmed that work on the school will begin next month and will be completed in 18 months time. The Minister for Education gave the undertaking during her visit to Galway last Friday that work would commence in April.

Embattled Government TDs felt the full brunt of local anger at a public meeting which was attended by an estimated 500. Planning permission for the €8.6 million school was obtained almost five years ago and there were fears that the planning would expire before the project could begin.

When planning was initially obtained, it was done so in controversial circumstances in that there was a lot of local objections to the school being built. Junior Minister Micheal Kitt confirmed that the Minister have given her approval for work to begin on the new Glenamaddy Community School next month.

He said that the Minister had accepted that there was a commitment to provide a new school and she stated that she is now fully honouring this commitment. The Minister met with a deputation from the school and Minister Kitt welcomed the positive news conveyed by her to the school representatives.
