CITY TRIBUNE
Gilgamesh at Town Hall
Macnas Theatre’s planned epic production for Galway 2020, Gilgamesh, which was to be staged across several months, outdoors and in the city’s Black Box, was one of the biggest casualties of Covid.
However, the company, under its Artistic Director, Noeline Kavanagh, kept the flag flying albeit in a different medium and has made a series of short films, the final one of which will premiere on Sunday, September 12, at the city’s Town Hall Theatre.
The 22-minute film will be screened in front of a live, socially distanced audience, followed by a live ‘In Conversation’ with Noeline and playwright Marina Carr, who wrote the script.
They will discuss how they re-imagined their version of this journey, inspired by the world’s oldest surviving legend, the 3,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh.
Shot on location around Ireland earlier this year, this final film travels from the majestic Babylonian city of Uruk and the bogs and deserts of earth to the realm of the Gods as it follows the adventures of the demi-god Gilgamesh. Along the way, Macnas explore timeless themes – leadership, love, power, death and the power of nature.
The film features the work of cinematographer Colm Hogan, designers Julian Crouch and Orla Clogher, costume designer Cherie White, and music and sound designer Nick Powell.
