Young city voters with an interest in left-wing politics and a fondness for a caricature on national radio no doubt contributed to Labour’s Michael D. Higgins’ vote in Galway West.

In fact Michael D., who was the second TD elected in the constituency after Eamon Ó Cuív, gave these young voters credit for helping him get elected for another Dáil term.

Speaking at the count on Saturday, the colourful politician said that a new constituency had emerged in Galway, which rated worldwide poverty and peace among its concerns, not just indigenous issues.

And with the huge popularity of his character on Today FM’s ‘Gift Grub’, he hasn’t had any trouble with recognition.
