Salthill Beach last weekend.

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Gardaí have warned they will be out in force this Bank Holiday weekend with a network of patrols and checkpoints to ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations in locations such the Prom, Ballyloughane Beach and Rinville Park.

Last weekend, during the good weather, Gardaí moved people on from Salthill Beach after they had set up deckchairs and picnics.

And the Chief Executive of Galway City Council has made a heartfelt plea to stay away from beaches, parks and other leisure hotspots this Bank Holiday weekend.

“Please stay at home – don’t travel to the beaches or the parks – and just think of other vulnerable people whose lives may depend on your actions,” the Council’s Brendan McGrath told the Galway City Tribune.

He said that like the ‘vast majority’ of the general public, he was extremely disappointed at the numbers of people congregating last week at beaches, parks and forest areas.

“We are on about saving the lives of people. Most families – like my own – are all too acutely aware of people who can be especially vulnerable to the coronavirus.”
