Gardaí to meet with farmers on rural crime measures

Stephen Canavan: Rural thefts still a big worry.

THEFTS and fears of break-ins continue to be the two most pressing security issues for farmers, according to Galway IFA Chair Stephen Canavan.

He said that he welcomed the National Community Engagement Day on Wednesday next, April 27, involving An Garda Síochána, the IFA and members of the National Rural Safety Forum.

On that date, Gardaí from all over the country will meet local people at 300 different venues (for venues and times see: www.garda.ie) to discuss all aspects of security in country areas.

“The theft of farm equipment such as trailers is an ongoing issue for farmers and the rural community, while farmers – and especially those living alone – do have worries about break-ins and their own personal security.

“We have always felt strongly that a visible Garda presence in rural areas is the best deterrent, and we welcome this engagement day. I would encourage farmers to turn out at their local venue and to raise any security issues they have with the Gardaí,” said Stephen Canavan.

He also said that farmers had concerns over trespass issues on their lands and especially so where dogs were let roam free.

The Community Engagement Day was last held in 2020 and this year’s meetings will be informal and will last for about an hour, according to the IFA.
