Gardaí promise to keep close eye on pubs

GALWAY Gardaí carried out almost 140 checks on pub-restaurants over last weekend and while the vast majority of them were in compliance with the Covid guidelines, they have warned over any complacency setting in.

Garda Chief Superintendent, Tom Curley, told the Connacht Tribune, that as more and more places re-opened – including the pub-restaurants – there was a greater onus than ever for precautions to be adhered to.

“I think that we all remember quite vividly the early days of the lockdown and the real fears and anxieties that it led to in communities.

“The last thing we want now is to let our guard down and take risks that could lead to a second surge of the Covid-19 virus – it is great to see places re-opening but we all have to be ultra-careful,” said Chief Supt. Curley.

While the Gardaí have become the main ‘enforcers’ of the Covid-19 health guidelines, Tom Curley, said that the Garda emphasis continued to be on encouraging the general public to voluntarily observe the guidelines which were for the good of everyone.

“Since the early days of the lockdown we have made a lot of progress in dealing with what has been a massive public health issue. Yes, normal activity is returning, but we have to be even more careful now,” said Tom Curley.
