Gardaí issue warning to ‘Donegal Tuesday’ revellers

Gardaí have warned revellers taking part in ‘Donegal Tuesday’ in Galway today that they will not be tolerating any antisocial behaviour.

By 10.30am today, around 200 people were queuing outside the Hole in the Wall bar on Eyre Street in the city – regarded as the ‘home’ of the event – with the line snaking back to Eglinton Street.

The event is part of the unofficial RAG Week in Galway – both NUI Galway and GMIT withdrew their support of charity week in 2011 because of serious issues with antisocial behaviour.

City centre nightclub, Carbon, had been planning to open its doors at 11am, but abandoned the idea last night.

Extra Gardaí and ‘paddywagons’ have been drafted in to deal with any Public Order offences.

“We will be focusing on antisocial behaviour as in previous years and we will be taking a no-nonsense approach.

“We’re not saying to people don’t enjoy themselves but we’d urge students to just be mindful of people around them. Everyone has responsibility for themselves.”
