The car, understood to be driven by a foreign-national, hit another vehicle near the Raddison Hotel and failed to stop at about 4 o’clock last evening.

Gardai were alerted and two patrol cars gave chase as the driver took a left turn at the fire station on Fr Griffin road and headed for The Claddagh.

He came back up to Fr Griffin Road and headed towards Salthill at speed.

Along the route the car being chased by the Garda hit several other vehicles causing them damage and onlookers watched in horror as the car approached the Westside Junction at great speed.

The driver was taken to Mill street Garda station where he was detained for suspected drink driving and other motoring offences.
