GARDAI EXAMINE CIRCUMSTANCES OF FATAL TUAM COLLISION
Date Published: 22-Oct-2012
Gardai investigating a car crash in Tuam yesterday – in which two young girls died – are examining whether the driver of the car may have suffered a seizure in the moments before the collision.
The babies, who were the only two children of Michelle and John Gilmore of the Meadows, Milltown Road, have been named as two year old Kate and three month old Grace.
They were hit by a car as their father was pushing their buggy on the hard shoulder on the Milltown side of Tuam, just before 1 yesterday afternoon.
It’s thought the driver of the car may have become ill and veered off the road.
All four were brought to University Hospital Galway where babies Kate and Grace were pronounced dead a short time later.
Their father John suffered minor injuries and was treated at UHG.
The driver of the car – the sole occupant – is still being treated at UHG this morning for non-serious injuries.
Forensic examiners carried out a full investigation of the scene last evening and the results are now being analysed as part of the garda investigation.
Local Cllr Tom McHugh told Galway Talks that the community is feeling a great sense of loss.
