Gardai are awaiting the results of the post mortem examination on the young man stabbed in the city early today [wed jun 3] before upgrading their enquiries to a murder investigation

20 year-old Kieran Cunningham, the eldest of three children from Slievefinn, died in hospital shortly after 3am from a number of stab wounds inflicted during an attack on Williamsgate Street an hour earlier

The Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis arrived in the city from Dublin this afternoon to carry out the post mortem at University Hospital Galway

Superintendent Tom Curley, who’s leading the inquiry says Kieran had been socialising with friends in Karma nightclub in the city

He says there’s no evidence to suggest Kieran was involved in an altercation in the nightclub and was on his own when he was attacked
