Students at the Newcastle campus are due to vote tomorrow in a referendum which will decide if the NUI Galway Students’ Union will support a national referendum on same-sex marriage.

This evening, up to 200 students, both for and against gay marriage, are gathered at the university.

A group of up to 50 students who want a NO vote in tomorrow’s referendum are staging a sit-in on the concourse.

This evening, Gardaí were called to the scene for a second time to monitor the situation.

Earlier this afternoon, Gardaí were called following reports of a dispute between students on the issue, but no arrests were made.
