Gardai at County Council to help alleviate motor tax queue

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Two Gardaí are at the County Council building at Prospect Hill in the city to stamp forms to confirm a vehicle has been off the road.

The queue at the city centre motor tax office is out the door of the building and up the footpath towards Bohermore.

In Ballinasloe, the queue at the motor tax office is back as far as the church.

From tomorrow, anyone who wants to declare a vehicle off the road, must do so in advance of the period of non-usage.

Previously, if a car was off the road, the owner had to fill out a form and bring it to a garda station and get it stamped and therefore would not be liable for motor tax arrears.

Speaking on ‘Galway Talks’, Director of Finance with the County Council, Ger Mullarkey says if people post in forms today, the Council will accept them.

Councillor Tom Welby, who’s in the Council building at Prospect Hill this morning, says there are serious health and safety concerns as a result of hundreds of people queuing.

Fine Gael County Councillor, Tom McHugh says Environment Minister Phil Hogan needs to extend the deadline.
