GARDAI APPEAL FOR PUBLIC HELP IN ALLEGED CITY ASSAULT CASE

Galway Gardaí are seeking the public’s help in connection with an alleged sexual assault in the city.
A 19 year old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted after getting into a car with a stranger at the traffic lights at the Dyke Road and Bóthar na mBan last Thursday morning.
The victim had been socialising on Wednesday night and claims she was subjected to a three hour ordeal of abuse when she got into the car.
A 27 year old man, a native of Pakistan, appeared in court on Saturday, having been arrested in connection with the incident.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in custody to appear at Harristown court this Friday.
Gardaí are now appealling for people who may have seen the young woman on Thursday morning to come forward.
She is described as 5 feet 8 inches in height, slim build with brown hair and was wearing a greenish/blue dress.
Superintendent Tom Curley of Galway Garda Station is appealling for two taxi drivers who may have seen her near the Dyke road junction around 4am on Thursday to come forward.
The woman was released at Doughiska around 7.15am and a woman who was coming out of the Centra in Doughiska offered her assistance.
Gardaí are hoping to speak with the woman who offered assistance and also with another woman who was sitting in a parked silver car.
Superintendent Curley says the alleged victim also tried to flag down cars in the Doughiska area between 7.15 and 7.40am last Thursday and anyone who may have seen her can contact Galway Gardaí at 091 53000.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
