Garda task force set up to nab gang behind attacks
Galway City Tribune – Gardaí have made two arrests over recent days in relation to a series of assaults and robberies in the city – one of them involving the use of a hammer.
The Gardai have also put in place a special task force aimed at targeting the activities of the gang members – all of whom are thought to be in their teens.
Two separate arrests of youths were made in the city area on Tuesday and Wednesday – both were questioned at Galway’s Mill Street Station and both were released without charge.
A file is being prepared for forwarding to the DPP by Gardaí who have set up an incident room to deal with four such robbery and assault incidents that occurred last weekend.
The most serious of the incidents occurred in an open area in the Knocknacarra Shopping Centre at 8.30pm on Sunday last when an employee of the centre was set upon by a gang of youths and hit on the head with a hammer.
The victim, who had his wallet and phone stole, was treated for his injuries at University Hospital Galway, but was released later. He is understood to have made a full recovery.
