Garda probe into ‘slave’ worker on Galway farm
A County Galway farmer is under investigation by Gardaí for employing a non-national worker and not paying him – the man was living in a container with no toilet facilities.
According to Garda sources, the farm worker, had been working for the farmer for around two months and was not being paid.
The man, who has very little English, approached Gardaí accompanied by a friend to make a complaint about the farmer who has a large acreage.
A statement has been taken from the worker who was living in ‘slavish’ conditions on the farm. He has been living in the country for the past eight years and has his own PPS number.
He had been living in Loughrea before taking up employment in another part of the county with the farmer who provided him with accommodation in the steel container which did not have any proper facilities.
The matter is now being investigated by Gardai from Mill Street in Galway City.
