GARDA OMBUDSMAN INVESTIGATING TWO GALWAY ROAD DEATHS
Date Published: 30-Jul-2007
The newly established Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating two of the four fatal road crashes which took place in Galway yesterday [sun jul 29].
The Commission, which was set up in May, has to be involved because Gardaí were involved in various ways in the two crashes in Oughterard and Ballinasloe.
In Oughterard a car being driven by an off-duty Garda struck a pedestrian at Glebe – 53 year old Dave Solman who died from his injuries.
In Ballinasloe last night a 36 year old local man died when his motor cycle lost control and crashed at 11.45pm at Sralea [srah-lay], on the Ballinasloe to Shannonbridge Road.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission is involved because a Garda patrol car was following the motorcyclist at the time of the crash.
A statement from the Commission says in an apparent attempt to evade the Gardaí, a member of the public crashed his motorcycle and later died in hospital.
