A file is currently being prepared by Gardaí following the tragic incident which claimed the lives of two young children in Tuam almost three weeks ago.

Statements have been taken from a number of people in relation to the crash which resulted in two year old Kate Gilmore and her twelve week old sister Grace losing their lives.

Cortoon native John Gilmore was pushing his two daughters in a twin buggy when a car crashed into them resulting in the deaths which numbed the whole of County Galway.

Hundreds of floral tributes and candles remain at the scene of the horrific incident where many motorists stop and say a prayer for the two girls.

Around 1,500 people attended the funeral of the sisters in Belclare where John and his wife Michelle were married four years ago. The children were buried in the same coffin at nearby Killower Cemetery.

Gardaí have confirmed to the Connacht Tribune that a thorough investigation is taking place into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the Gilmore sisters.

Sergeant Martin Connor of Tuam Garda Station said that a file was currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions but he could not say when it would be completed.

“Statements have been taken from a number of individuals and a file is being prepared for the DPP who will ultimately decide on what course of action will be taken.

“It is standard procedure that a thorough investigation takes place into any fatality and that a file is prepared. We have a full investigation team conducting inquiries into this tragic incident and hopefully a file will be completed in the very near future,” Sergeant Connor said.
