Garda helicopter to monitor ‘boy racers’
Extra Garda resources – including the Air Support Unit – will be drafted into the city today to combat problems caused by ‘boy racers’ during the Galway International Rally weekend.
Gardaí have said there will be a zero tolerance approach to motorists caught ‘diffing’ – performing controlled slides of cars – and other dangerous manoeuvres on the roads and in carparks.
Evidence will also be recorded on camera so Gardaí can pursue offenders at a later point.
Officers have said they will be monitoring social media to ascertain details of ‘meet-ups’, and deploying resources.
Already, more than 800 people have indicated on a Facebook event page that they will be attending a meet-up tonight in a city carpark.
A spokesperson said that an operational order is in place for the weekend to deal with any illegal activity.
