Garda crackdown sees begging detections treble

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The number of begging incidents detected by Gardaí in Galway City so far this year has more than trebled to 32.

Last year, during the same period up to November, there were just nine incidents, but that has increased by 23 this year.

Chief Superintendent Tom Curley told a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee (JPC) said there were two reasons for the increase.

He said members of the JPC had raised it as an issue that needed attention from Gardaí, and so that was taken on board.

Secondly, he said, the new Garda roster meant that he had more Gardaí at his disposal to be on the beat, because the number of Garda units went from five to four.

“In October and November, we had extra patrols out,” he said.
