Organised gangs are targeting homes and businesses across Galway to steal kerosene home heating oil.

At a meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee this week, Chief Superintendent of the Galway Garda Division, Donal Ó Cualáin said the Crime Prevention Officer is liasing with schools in the county.

It follows a number of thefts of equipment and heating oil from premises and schools along the N63 between Roscommon and Galway.

The Chief Superintendent said that the message must go out that people should secure their property.

He said special gangs are following oil delivery trucks, watching oil being delivered and then draining the tanks.
