Galwegians win but Corinthians season to end in disappointment

Galwegians concluded a memorable season when they confirmed their absolute supremacy in the Ulster Bank League Division 2a by recording a 14th consecutive League win in emphatic fashion at home to Ulster side Rainey Old Boys on Saturday, running out 50-3 winners.

Having secured promotion a month ago and the League title confirmed away to Bective all of three weeks ago, there was a carnival atmosphere in Glenina with a large crowd in expectant mood. And the Sky Blues did not disappoint, producing eight tries in the process.

However there was no such party atmosphere out the Tuam Road, as a 21-13 defeat for Corinthians at the hands of Belfast harlequins, coupled with a win for Buccaneers over UL/Bohemians, means the Cloonacauneen side have been pipped for the promotion play-off spot by their Midlands rivals.

Corinthians had won 11 of their first 12 games, but a run of four defeats in their last five games – coupled with an inability to pick up try bonus points during that winning stretch, means they cannot now catch Buccaneers with one game remaining in Division 1b.
