Galwegians back €9m land sale to GMIT
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Club members have given their stamp of approval to a deal in which Galwegians will sell their home grounds at Glenina to GMIT for a sum in the region of €9 million – with 99% of attendees at a special meeting backing the sale.
As part of the deal, ’Wegians will have 10 years to vacate Crowley Park, while they search for a new site, as it is understood the site the club sought permission to develop in Oranswell is no longer a runner.
Confirming the sale this week, Chair of the Galwegians’ Board, Frank Kinneen, said the level of support at last week’s meeting was resounding and that the club was very united in its approval of the plan.
“There have been previous connections between the club and GMIT, but for one reason or another, they never got to the alter – this deal has. They have secured permission to buy the lands and we have now got permission to sell.
“Galwegians have a licence of almost 10 years to stay in Glenina so we’re not going anywhere in the immediate future, and that will give us time to source a new grounds, preferably within the city boundary,” said Mr Kinneen.
He also confirmed that it was ‘highly unlikely’ that Oranswell ‘will be considered in plans going forward’.
