Galway’s newly elected councils to hold first meetings
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Cathaoirleach and Leas-Chathaoirleach for Galway City and County Councils will be selected next week (June 6).
The 18 newly elected city councillors and 39 county councillors will hold the first of their meetings for their five year term next Friday.
Galway County Council will hold its annual meeting at County Buildings at 2 next Friday.
This will be followed by a meeting of the new city council at City Hall on College Road at 6pm.
Central to the agenda for both meetings is the election of the Cathaoirleach and Leas-Chathaoirleach.
The city council will also make appointments to a number of outside bodies including the Association of Irish Local Government.
The newly elected county council now has 12 Fianna Fail representatives, 12 Fine Gael, 11 independents, one Republican Sinn Fein and three Sinn Fein members.
17 of these are new councillors.
The renewed city council has representation from six independents, four Fine Gael, three Fianna Fail, three Sinn Fein and two Labour members.
Seven of these are new councillors.
The political wranglings for the balance of power will intensify over the bank holiday weekend in the countdown to the first meetings next Friday.
