Galway’s hybrid service cuts diesel consumption and greenhouse gas by 30%
Bus Éireann’s decision to make Galway the country’s first city with an entirely hybrid bus service last year has seen diesel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions fall by almost one-third as a direct result.
That was revealed by the company as it published its first annual Sustainability Report – and announced plans to reconfigure its Galway bus depot to accommodate electric vehicles, in addition to training the company’s craft workers to facilitate the transition from diesel to electric.
With Galway as the pioneer project, the company now boasts a fleet of 61 hybrid and three hydrogen buses across the country, funded by the National Transport Authority and enabling 150,000km of emission-free journeys on Galway, Limerick and Dublin commuter routes.
Additionally, in Galway, engineering teams completed hybrid vehicle maintenance training – the first in Ireland to achieve this qualification from the Institute of the Motor Industry.
