Galway’s Covid death toll passes 300 milestone

Galway’s Covid-19 death toll has passed the 300 milestone. The latest official mortality figures come as visitor restrictions remain in place at Galway’s public hospitals struggling to cope with a surge in Covid-19 and flu cases on outbreak wards.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HSPC) has confirmed a total of 309 Covid-19 deaths in Galway since the start of the Coronavirus Pandemic on March 1, 2020.

Its latest monthly report on Covid-19 deaths in Ireland suggests there were over 140 Covid-19 deaths in Galway in 2022, making it the worst of the three years.

Meanwhile, Galway’s public hospitals continue to grapple with a surge in patients with Covid-19 and flu.

According to the HSE, on Tuesday some 34 patients with Covid-19 were being treated at University Hospital Galway, and a further seven at Portiuncula University Hospital. Six of these cases were confirmed within the previous 24-hours.

There were no confirmed Covid-19 cases being treated in intensive care or high dependency units.

Both hospitals continue to suffer from overcrowding. On Tuesday, some 52 patients were waiting on trolleys for a bed to become available at UHG, and there were 25 waiting on trolleys in Ballinasloe, according to INMO Trolley Watch.
