Ruth Murphy, Legal Director, BT presents the Social and Behavioural Junior Group First Prize to Riain Kennedy, Andrew Gordon and Reuben Florisson from Colaiste Iognaid S.J., Galway for their project "BOTTLE SHOT - A Nudge in the Right Direction.

It was another bumper year for Galway schools at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition which took place in Dublin last weekend – with 18 entries from secondary schools across city and county.

And of Galway’s entries, five walked away from the RDS with awards in their respective categories, while a further three projects were highly commended by judges.

Among the award winners was ‘BOTTLE SHOT – a nudge in the right direction’, a project by Reuben Florisson, Andrew Gordan and Riain Kennedy from Coláiste Iognáid (the Jes) in Galway City.

Taking Junior Group First Prize in the Social and Behavioural Sciences category, the project examined how small external influences, such as butting basketball hoop over a bin, can encourage behavioural change by ‘nudging’ people towards recycling more.

The three first year students, who were mentored by Dr Daniella Donghi, also took home the prestigious Williams Lea Special Award – given to the project that demonstrated the best use of graphic design in both its display presentation at the exhibition, and in its project report book.

There was much to celebrate for St Mary’s College in Galway City, which had three participating projects – one of which took second place in the Senior Group section of the Social and Behavioural Sciences section.
