GALWAY WOMAN AND HUSBAND UNDER HOUSE ARREST IN EYGPT
Date Published: 11-Feb-2008
A Galway woman and her husband are under guarded house arrest in Egypt.
Treasa Ní Cheanabháin from Barna entered Gaza illegally last week with her daughter Naisrín to give out aid to hospitals and orphanages.
When they tried to cross the border back into Eygpt at a crossing at Rafah, they were turned away.
They were subsequently allowed the cross the border late last week, but now Treasa Ní Cheanabháin is under house arrest.
Her daughter Naisrín, who is an Eygptian citizen was freed, but Treasa is still awaiting news on her own situation.
Her husband, who is also an Eygptian citizen, joined her over the weekend and both he and his wife and being detained at a hotel in Eygpt.
Both their passports have been confiscated and Treasa claims military personnel told her she would not win a case in the courts and that it could get “dirty”.
Treasa is hopeful that a resolution will be found in the coming days.
