Galway WFC 4

Treaty United 1

A magic seven-minute spell which saw them fire home four first-half goals in quick succession allowed Galway WFC run out comfortable winners of this Women’s National League tie at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday afternoon.

Though the highlights of this contest were brief as the home side killed off the game in ruthless fashion,  allowances have to be made for the opposition, who always played second fiddleover the 90 minutes. After all the goals were all rattled home in the opening quarter, the home side gradually dropped the tempo and their contribution in the second half was disappointing as Galway WFC let their standards fall to the level of more limited opponents.

With the game already won at such an early stage, a slackening off of some description could be expected, but successful teams maintain their concentration and do not drop off the pace like the home side did on this occasion. Just four games into the season, the contribution of striker Rachel Kearns cannot be emphasised enough, but an ankle injury resulted in the Mayo native departing the fray at the break and there is no doubt that her departure had a huge bearing on the mindset of the team thereafter.

Manager Billy Clery gave Sinead Donovan a first start of the season in the only change from the side that lost against DLR Waves the previous weekend and the silky touches of the midfielder made a significant contribution to the success of the side.

Galway set the tone from the outset and with a dominant Savannah McCarthy imposing her authority on the game from the off, they went close twice in the early exchanges as Donovan brought smart saves from goalkeeper Meadbh Ryan.

However, there was nothing she could do about it as the home side opening their account in the 11th minute when Chloe Moloney headed down a deep Kate Slevin corner and the long serving Lynley McKey struck a wonderful volley from just inside the box to put them 1-0 up.
