Galway WFC travelled to Morton Stadium, Santry to take on Bus Éireann WNL champions and league leaders Raheny United last Sunday, but despite being the first side to put two goals past their hosts, they eventually left empty-handed.

Galway WFC shocked their hosts taking the lead on six minutes when Ruth Fahy threaded a ball through to Lisa Casserly, who finished past Niamh Reid Burke, the first time Raheny United had gone behind this season.

The hosts, with six internationals in their starting line-up, pilled on the pressure but Nigel Keady’s side were able to hold them to long range chances. However, the pressure eventually paid-off on the stroke of half-time when Claire Shine popped up to notch an equaliser, leaving the sides level at the break.

The home side dominated the early second-half exchanges, and took the lead nine minutes after the break when, after a succession of corners, substitute Seana Cooke was on hand to fire home from the edge of the box.

There was no let-up from the home side, and they extended their lead on the hour mark when Caroline Thorpe did all the spade work before setting-up Sinead O’Farrelly to smash home from 25 yards. They wrapped up the points 15 minutes from time when Kiera Cormican took down Shine in the penalty area, and Noelle Murray made no mistake from 12 yards.

However , the visitors kept battling and Becky Walsh pulled one back three minutes later, going on a mazy run from left back to find herself on the right corner of the penalty area, from where she let fly to find the net.

Next up for Galway WFC will be second-placed Peamount United in Eamonn Deacy Park this Sunday at 2pm. Peamount come West hot on the heels of their 6-1 hammering of Wexford, and the game will see a return of Galway natives JulieAnne Russell and Dora Gorman.
