After dropping points against two of the title challengers in their previous games, Galway WFC got back on track in Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening with a laboured single goal success over Limerick visitors, Treaty United.

For the duration they were the better team, but an inability to take chances meant they had to endure a more nerve-wracking closing experience than was necessary.

After losing Sinead Donovan to an early injury, her replacement Savannah McCarthy played a crucial part in setting up the goal as Chloe Singleton applied the finishing touch for a 43rd minute match winner.

The home side enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening half, without over threatening Meabh Ryan in the Treaty goal. The resumption saw them up the stakes, but for all their dominance they were either foiled by the saves of Ryan or just poor finishing on other occasions.

As ever, McCarthy was hugely influential in central midfield alongside Jamie Turrentine, and they ensured that the home side were on the front foot for the duration.

Chances fell to Lynsey McKey, Theresa Kinnevey and Aoife Thompson but none could get past Ryan. McCarthy and Turrentine both went close, before impressive substitute Aoife Lynagh had a shot blocked; and captain, Ciara Cormican, could not force a late McKey corner over the line in a crowded goalmouth.

Billy Clery’s charges have sealed their position in the top five in the table ahead of the league breaking into two sections next month.

They now turn their attention to their FAI Women’s Cup quarter-final this weekend when they host Wexford FC in Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow (6pm). The sides have not met so far this season, but Wexford suffered a shock home defeat against Cork City at the weekend.

Galway WFC: Ronayne, Kinnevey, Brennan (Lobato 71), Fox, Cormican, De Burca, Singleton, Thompson (inj, McCarthy 7), McKey, Turrentine (Lynagh 71).

Treaty United: Ryan, O’Sullivan, Parbet (Keane 82), Curtin, Mitchell, Duncliff (Connolly 71), Davis, O’Gorman (R Horgan 82), A Horgan (Doherty 63), Griffin (Kavanagh 71), Keenan.

Referee:  B Folan.
