Galway WFC run riot in big victory over visitors Cork
Galway WFC 6
Cork City 1
Mike Rafferty at Eamonn Deacy Park
AFTER spending a considerable amount of time chasing players from Peamount, Shelbourne and Wexford Youths in recent games, the shoe was on the other foot at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday when Galway WFC were the dominant force and, in the process, punished Cork City in clinical fashion in this Women’s National League contest.
Three goals in each half was a fitting reward for Stephen Lally’s charges and, indeed, the margin of victory could have been greater if Galway WFC displayed the same urgency in the second half as they did in the first. Despite going behind to an out of the blue strike, they dictated matters and a 3-1 interval advantage was the minimun reward for an impressive opening half.
With Julie-Ann Russell and Ruth Fahy unavailable, Becky Walsh and Kate Slevin came into the starting eleven and were part of a side who were in control of proceedings. Chloe Singleton has impressed hugely since her return from injury and the Athlone native was denied by a combination of goalkeeper Abby McCarthy and the crossbar in the early exchanges, before a cracking effort from outside the box by Eve Mangan fired the visitors ahead on 12 minutes.
It was a strike very much against the run of play for Cork, but Galway WFC were still very much in command of general play and they levelled matters on 21 minutes when Singleton was on the end of a Slevin cross in firing home from close range.
