Galway WFC fall to their bogey side DLR Waves for third time
DLR Waves 3
Galway WFC 2
The Dunlaoire-based DLR Waves continue to hold the Indian sign over the Galway side as they registered their third win of the season over Nigel Keady’s charges in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League at the weekend.
The final outcome probably does a little injustice to the visiting side, as they dominated the closing quarter, but despite an attacking 3-4-3 formation in that spell, they just could not find a way past an excellent home custodian in Avril Kilkelly.
It was DLR Waves who broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Sharon Cullen fired home, but just four minutes later, Sinéad Taylor availed of some home hesitancy to level matters from close range to tie up matters at 1-1.
The home side played with the aid of the elements in the opening-half and a long range effort by Sylvia Gee got the better of Melissa Casserly to leave the home side 2-1 to the good at the break.
The Dublin outfit added a third just after the restart when Cullen notched her second of the game following a goalmouth scramble. An incident in the build up to that goal led to Casserly suffering an injury that resulted in her been replaced in goal by Becky Walsh.
That set back stung Galway WFC into a strong response and for the remaining of the game were the dominant side. Susie Cunningham and Eleanor Stafford were introduced up front alongside Taylor and from a Lucy Hannon cross, leading scorer Taylor headed past Kilkelly to reduce the arrears to 3-2.
However that was as good as it got for the visitors, for despite Stafford crashing an effort off the crossbar and Lynley McKey been denied by a superb Kilkelly save, there was to be no further reward for the Galway ladies.
They host Cork Ladies in Eamonn Deacy Park this coming Sunday.
Galway WFC: Casserly (inj-B Walsh), Fox (Cunningham), Moran, Byrne, Cormican, A Walsh (Stafford), Fahy, De Burca, McKey, Hannon, Taylor.
U-19 LEAGUE
After a rather lean spell, Salthill Devon upset the odds with a smashing 2-1 away over Cobh Ramblers and in the process eased the pressure on themselves in the lower region of the Airtricity U-19 Elite Division.
A Rob Goldsmith goal gave the home side an early lead, but the visitors quickly responded as Eoin Walsh levelled matters with a cracking strike. The Devon winner arrived on 74 minutes when Morgan Lyons headed home a Ben Brennan cross.
Mervue United were not in action, as their away promotion play-off game against Derry City was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.
