Galway WFC edged out by high-flying Peamount Utd
Peamount United 3
Galway WFC 1
For the second week in succession, Galway WFC came up against top class opposition and while they stayed with the hosts for a long spell, their extra quality saw them comfortably through at the finish.
The visitors were missing Caroline Carter, Gráinne Barrett and Lisa Casserly from their previous outing against Raheny and they were replaced by Alana Moran, Aoife Walsh and Meabh Coleman. Upfront, the league’s leading scorer Sinéad Taylor returned at the expense of newcomer Eleanor Stafford.
In difficult conditions, chances were hard to come by and an Emily Cahill goal gave the home side a 1-0 interval lead. They doubled their advantage when Áine O’Gorman got the better of Melissa Casserly to make it 2-0, but Galway WFC responded in splendid fashion as Taylor side footed home a Lynsey McKey cross from the edge of the box to reduce the arrears on 70 minutes.
However, any sort of a revival was quickly killed off as O’Gorman notched her second of the day to increase the Peamount advantage to 3-1.
An interesting clash throughout saw former Salthill Devon colleagues Meabh De Burca (right full) and Julie Anne Russell (left winger) go head to head, while injury ruled out Dora Gorman from making an appearance.
