Galway WFC chasing top spot against DLR Waves
By Mike Rafferty
FOUR points from their opening two games is an encouraging start for Galway WFC in the Airtricity Women’s National League as they recorded a 3-3 draw with Cork City and followed this up with a 3-1 win over Bohemians.
Both games were played at Eamonn Deacy Park, but this Saturday Galway WFC take to the road for the first time when they face DLR Waves in Belfield at 6pm.
Though the Dublin outfit were not in action on the first weekend of league action, they shared the spoils in their only game to date when drawing 1-1 with Wexford Youths. While that was an acceptable outcome for them, DLR Waves were under pressure for a lot of the game and would have been delighted with the point gained.
Galway WFC manager Billy Clery kept faith with the same starting eleven for his side’s opening first games, but he will have to make at least one enforced change this weekend. Impressive midfielder Chloe Singleton was sent to the line for two yellow card offences in their last outing and she will miss the game through suspension.
New striker Rachel Kearns made a huge impression in those early games and her four goals sees her top the scoring charts in the league. The Mayo native was substituted in the latter stages of the game against Cork after getting a knock, but has trained fully since and is available for selection.
Clery took a reflective look first when he spoke to the Connacht Tribune this week. “Our opening two games of the season were somewhat different in that we played well against Cork, but some lapses of concentration and defensive mistakes ensured we paid a price for that.
“Matters were different in the second game against Bohemians as we were more subtle going forward and did not create as much. On the plus side, our defence was not exposed and heading into this game against DLR Waves we have to find a better balance between those two outcomes.
