Date Published: 29-Sep-2010
Galway university hospitals are owed almost four million euro by private insurers.
The revelation comes as managers attempt to save 13 million euro from the budgets of University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park hospital by the end of the year.
This is expected to be recouped by reducing the working hours of temporary staff, control of absenteeism and re-deployment of office staff.
Overtime payments and travel allowances will also be drastically reduced.
At yesterdays regional health forum in the city, members voiced their concern that proposed cutbacks would drastically impact on services in the region.
Regional director of operations John Hennessy told the meeting that waiting lists for elective surgery will get longer over the coming months.
Speaking at the Daíl earlier, Health Minister Mary Harney says Galway University Hospitals should pursue private insuror money as they simply have to work within their allocated budget
