Galway United seek first league victory in six games at Eamonn Deacy Park
GALWAY United welcome UCD to Eamonn Deacy Park this Friday (7.45pm) looking to end a scarcely believable five-game home run without a win.
When you consider the fact that United made it to the First Division play-off final last season, and were tipped by many as title favourites in this campaign, it comes as something of a jolt to realise that United’s most recent win on home soil was on September 18 when Enda Curran scored the only goal of the game against Wexford.
Since then, United have lost to Cobh Ramblers and Drogheda United, and drawn with UCD, Shelbourne and last Friday, Treaty United. That is not the kind of form that will have you involved in the shake-up for the play-offs, never mind the title, in what is the most competitive First Division campaign in years.
They won’t have it easy against a UCD side that has taken eight points from their opening four games, scoring four goals in both of the games they won: defeating Cobh Ramblers 4-0 in St Colman’s Park in their second game; while Cabinteely had their backsides handed to them in Belfield last weekend with the home side running out 4-1 winners.
“UCD are really good, I saw them a couple of weeks ago when they beat Cobh 4-0,” United manager John Caulfield told Tribune Sport.
“They are an electric team, and are somewhat unsung – people are talking about everyone else [for the title] but UCD are one of the dark horses, they are there up around the play-offs every year.
“Last year, it was a shock Longford beat them in the playoffs as they have a very good team, and they have a lot of the same players and have brought in new ones, they are a really dangerous team,” he said.
A dangerous team is the last side you need to be playing when confidence is low, as is surely the case with the United squad after an underwhelming start to the season. They have won just two points from a possible nine on the field of play, the ‘tick’ in their win column coming from a committee hearing which handed them a 3-0 win over Cabinteely last week.
