GALWAY United produced as emphatic a response as you could wish for to the defeat to Cork City just before the midseason break when filleting Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night.

The scoreline might be a little harsh on the home side, who did enjoy a decent spell and scored arguably the goal of the game, but the visitors showed a ruthlessness not normally associated with any United side from the any time in the last 45 years or so to leave no-one in doubt about their title aspirations this season.

They were awarded a couple of late free-kicks and, given the fact they were four goals to the good at that stage, it was thought they might just take the ball into the corner to run down the clock. But no, they threw bodies forward looking to add even more goals as they returned from the midseason break purring with confidence and determination.

John Caulfield made one change to the side that lost to City in the top-of-the-table clash three weeks earlier, with Ronan Manning handed his first start of the season, and while he lasted less than an hour before being called ashore, the United man put in a shift that should cement his place in every future starting XI.

Gary Boylan dropped to the bench to make way for Manning, and he was joined there by Shane Doherty, who made a welcome return to the squad after enduring a nightmare three-month absence due to a post-traumatic concussion injury.
