Galway United lack cutting edge in top of the table tie
Galway United 0
Cork City 1
GALWAY United blew their lines on the big stage once again on Friday night as they surrendered a seven-match winning run, and their place at the top of the table, in a game that was almost a mirror image of the meeting between these same two sides in Turners Cross back in March.
Once again the visiting side finished with 10 men, but also took home the three points, despite being under a constant barrage of pressure for almost the entire second-half, a massive defensive effort getting its ultimate reward.
Just like the play-off semi-final against Bray Wanderers at the end of last season, United were playing in front of a near-packed ground – the official attendance was 4,115 – but once again the vast majority of those went home disappointed as United failed to make their dominance count on the scoreboard.
It is not that they played badly, but they just didn’t play that well either: the second-half was almost exclusively played in the City half – the visitors hadn’t a single effort on goal after the break – but for all that possession and territory, United were somewhat one dimensional in attack.
Far too often, United attacks ended with balls just being floated centrally into the penalty box which was just meat and drink to the towering Ally Gilchrist, Josh Honohan, and Jonas Hakkinen. They did create some decent chances, but on a night when far too many players had an off night, United were punished for failing to put any of those chances away, and were undone by a quality strike.
