IT is that time of the year again; playoffs are on the horizon and Galway United are preparing for their first-leg clash against Bray Wanderers or Treaty United next Wednesday. But first up is their last league game against Cork City at Turner’s Cross tonight Friday, a club that John Caulfield knows all too well.

United go into this week’s fixture against the Rebel Army in fine form after winning their last four First Division games. If United win again tonight it will be the third time that the club has won five league games in a row under John Caulfield since he has taken over.

A late Wilson Waweru goal in a 1-0 victory at Eamonn Deacy Park was enough to take the spoils in a tight contest against Bray Wanderers last Friday which secured a second-place finish for Caulfield’s side. Waweru, who bagged his eighth goal of the season against the Seagulls, delighted the United manager who can see the potential that the 20-year-old striker possesses.

“Goals change matches. I am delighted for Wilson because we are trying to work with him all the time,” Caulfield said.

“Once the ball went in over the top you could see he got a split-second ahead of the keeper. That is what you need to do to be a potent striker and a player that can get goals like that. They are the type of goals that win you matches and make you a very good player. If Wilson can keep doing that then he will be a very good striker.”

This week’s opposition Cork City, where Caulfield had a successful tenure as both player and manager, head into their clash with United after a 1-0 defeat to UCD at the UCD Bowl last time out. This year’s First Division top goalscorer Colm Whelan hit the only goal in the game from the penalty spot for the students which kept Colin Healy’s outfit in seventh place on the First Division table.
