Galway United boss Caulfield wants team to bounce back from Longford loss

GALWAY United manager John Caulfield admits that his side made life difficult for themselves last Friday night with a below-par performance that saw them lose for the first time this season, and he is looking for a bounce-back display this Friday night when Cobh Ramblers visit Eamonn Deacy Park (7.45pm).

United were well off the pace away to Longford Town last Friday, with far too many players producing performances that were a long way from what is expected of them, and the manager says it was one of those nights when players failed to reach the standards expected of them.

“They have been fantastic, the lads, but a lot of our players didn’t seem to have the energy of the last two months, so maybe it is a little bit of a wake-up call.

“It was disappointing as too many of our players were below par. I don’t want to be too critical of the lads but we weren’t at our best. Three changes didn’t help our fluency or our attacking play out wide, and there were just some performance that were not good enough.

“You expect lads will play at a high level and too many of them weren’t and that is just disappointing,” he says of the display against Longford Town.

He knows his side are capable of much better, and he’s not wrong: United were unbeaten going into last weekend’s game, and still sit just three points off top spot, with a game in hand on table-toppers, Cork City. At the same stage last season, United had one win from the six games they had played and were nine points off the top.
