MAYO, for the second year running, brought an early end to the Galway U20 footballers’ championship campaign as they ran out hard-earned winners in a match played in miserable conditions at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence

If ever there was a game to be played indoors, it was this one. Unfortunately for both teams, they had to take to the pitch in the shadow of the new Air Dome, rather than under its roof. The effects of a Status Yellow wind warning, not to mention biting cold and freezing showers, meant that this contest was doomed as a spectacle from the outset and the team who made the least mistakes would come out on top.

Galway had the wind at their backs in the first half but, such was its strength, it wasn’t the clear advantage one might have thought. Judging any kind of kick was difficult and even short handpasses were being affected.

Mayo settled into the contest much quicker and were off the mark after just 45 seconds when centre-back Sam Callinan, who was excellent throughout for his side, was allowed to find space in the Galway defence before setting up Cian O’Connell to fire over.
