Galway turfcutters to return before courts in July

The case involving four men charged in relation to illegal turfcutting on a bog near Portumna has been adjourned.

Galway bay fm reports up to 200 turfcutters gathered outside Galway Courthouse today, and held a silent demonstration in solidarity with the men.

Pat McDonagh from Killeen, Ballyshrule; Michael D’Arcy of Ballycahill,Killimor; Padraic Byrne also of Killimor; and Anthony Porter of Bauntia,Woodford all appeared before Galway Circuit Court.

The charges relate to three separate incidents in May and August last year
contrary to section 35 and section 67 of the European Communities Birds
and Nautural Habitats regulations 2011.

Judge Keenan Johnson adjourned the matter to July 2nd pending further disclosure by the state.

Outside the courthouse, the demonstrators held placards saying ‘Our bogs are our bogs’ and included
local campaign group Glor na Tuaithe.

Following the brief hearing, the rally made its way from the courthouse to Eyre Square.
