Galway Town Councillors in line for retirement payment
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Retirement payments will be paid out to some town councillors in Galway, when the councils are abolished.
There are 27 councillors on Tuam, Loughrea and Ballinasloe Town Councils.
Environment Minister, Phil Hogan is abolishing 80 town councils next year, resulting in additional seats on the City and County Councils.
The Minister has set aside a budget to provide some retiring councillors with up to 16 thousand euro in gratuities.
According to today’s Irish Independent, town councillors who have served a full 5-year term and are not elected to any new office will qualify for a payment of 2 thousand 800.
