Galway tourist chiefs hope for Prince fillip

Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive in Galway this morning (Thursday) for a whistlestop tour, taking in an iconic pub, GAA Club and meetings with some of city’s leading arts groups – with the hospitality industry hoping the visit will be a boon for tourism.

Their first engagement kick-offs around 10am at Tribeton on Merchants Road, where Kate and William will see a performance organised by Galway 2020 – said to include representatives from Macnas and Galway Community Circus. They will also meet with a number of local youth, community and heritage groups at the trendy bar and restaurant.

From there, the couple travel to Tigh Chóilí on Mainguard Street to be treated to a taster of the pub’s famed trad music offering – with a performance by De Danann fiddler Ronan O’Flaherty from Renmore (son of the pub’s owner Cóilí O’Flaherty), Clarinbridge accordionist Conor Connolly who was TG4 Young Musician of the Year 2019, and Indreabhán guitarist Pádraig Ó Dubhghaill.

The Connacht Tribune understands that Kate and William will also meet with a number of leading members of the arts community while in Cóilí’s, including Artistic Director of Druid, Garry Hynes.

Leaving the pub, the pair are off on an organised ‘walkabout’ on Shop Street and High Street, with a barricade erected at Taaffe’s Pub – allowing members of the public to catch a glimpse of the second-in-line to the British throne.
