Galway too strong for students

THERE was no shouting from the rooftops or triumphant homecoming associated with this one, but the Galway footballers could feel quietly satisfied with a job well done as they captured the first silverware of the Liam Sammon era at Pearse Stadium on Sunday.
The Connacht FBD League title will count for little or nothing when people look back on 2008, but three well-taken second half goals at least saw the Tribesmen extend their unbeaten run under the new management to six games.
The Galway management should be pleased, too, that they registered this comfortable win without the services of the suspended Padraic Joyce and the injured Nicky Joyce, Finian Hanley, Joe Bergin, and Declan Meehan.
They should also have been boosted by the contribution which the roaming Matthew Clancy, named at centre forward but operating almost as a ‘sweeper’ on his own 40, made to the College’s cause. The Oughterard man was a bundle of energy throughout.
Weakened Galway may have been, and they hardly dominated around the midfield or half-forward sectors, but the county men were still too strong for a disappointing NUIG side.
