Galway is to play a leading role in the rollout of a new therapeutic approach to the treatment of liver cancer.

It follows the opening of a new European Headquarters at city pharmaceutical and medical device firm Delcath Systems today [May 25].

The US firm which set up in Mervue Business Park last year currently employs 10 staff with plans to expand the team in the future.

It has delevoped a CHEMOSTAT system which delivers concentrated chemotherapy to the liver.

Training agreements have now been established with nine leading cancer treatment centres across Europe.

In Ireland, two patients at University Hospital Galway are also set to begin treatment as part of the future rollout plan.

Gerry O’Sullivan is an Interventional Radiologist at UHG – he says the treatment reduces side-effects by managing system toxicity
